At the heart of ‘Inheritance | إرث’ lies the reclamation ofNada’s inherited identity as an Arab Middle Eastern Omani Muslim Woman. Each of these labels held the weight of conformity carried throughout her life. Yet her life never fully conformed to the conventional expectations of these inherited labels. This placed her in the ‘less of’ category of what an Arab Woman is defined to be - ‘not Muslim enough’, ‘not Omani enough’, ‘not Woman enough’. Naturally this embedded a sense of alienation, creating a separation from her land and people. Born from a deep longing to connect with her ancestral lineage, this film was birthed to reconcile and bridge the gap between her lived experience and inherited identity.
The visual story unfolds within the timeless, pristine landscape of the Omani salt pans. Far more than a static backdrop, this pure terrain holds a raw power to cleanse, to preserve, and to transform; it became the silent witness and a mirror for her inner transformation—the perfect stage for her becoming. Anchoring this landscape is the Jahla, a traditional Omani clay pot. It carries far more than water; it holds the collective weight of societal conformity and all that must be unlearned.
Nada uses her outfit design as a visual language to communicate her own authentic identity; she reconstructs the Omani traditional outfit to re-create her own understanding of her inherited labels. Honouring the internal knowing that her true self is not separate from her lineage but intricately woven into it.
When she begins to play with salt, something shifts. Alchemy begins. With bare hands and an open heart, she turns pain into play, water into salt, and wound into wonder. In movement, she transmutes. In dance, she reclaims her body. In prostration, she grounds herself between earth and divinity. This is not just a performance—it is a prayer, a return, and a release. The film leaves the viewer with a inquiry:
To what extent does conformity fully align with the soul’s knowing?
Through ‘Inheritance | إرث’, Nada affirms that we do not exist to passively mirror the ancestral scripts handed down to us; instead, our lived experiences expand them. By stitching our authentic stories directly into our heritage, we leave a unique, distinct soul imprint upon every label we choose to carry. Our true legacy is not created by conforming to all that is passed on to us, but by the courage with which we redefine it. Ultimately, it poses a quiet question to us all:
Who will you choose to become with the inheritance you receive?
